8/20/2006 Mike Gunther at the Turf Club

When I walked up to the Turf Club entrance Saturday night and Felix the doorguy was not only smiling but wearing a suit coat I should have known something was afoot. The calendar promised Valet, Romantica, Tin Star Sisters, Mike Gunther and the Crush Collision Trio, enough reasons to show up already. But I had somehow forgotten that this was also Valet singer Robin Kyle’s wedding reception.

Other indications this wasn’t just any night at the Turf? White linen tablecloths, a fancy-dressed clientele, a bagpiper, and a who’s who of Minnesota Music royalty filling the room until closing time reveling in the festive atmosphere (wait, that last bit is often the norm.) And the evening was rounded out by a few songs from the bride herself.

Never looking overdressed, Mike Gunther (pictured) played an awesome full set with his Restless Souls.
