8/6/2006 Brendan Benson of the Raconteurs at First Avenue

A trio of big name acts blew through Minneapolis in the first three days of August, creating a 3-day-long frenzy of sold out shows that people were offering their first born on Craigslist just to try and get into.

Ween played the State Theater on Tuesday, August 1st. Then Wednesday, modern soul sensations Gnarls Barkley played First Avenue to an audience that included members of Thursday's headliners, the Raconteurs. The following day, the Raconteurs covered one of Gnarls Barkley's songs - yes, of course it was "Crazy", and you can hear what it might have sounded like in a recording from San Francisco a few days earlier here - bringing the three days of craziness to at least a temporary end.

HowWasTheShow contributing photographer Stacy Sandstrom was one of the lucky folks to win tickets to the show on the 89.3 the Current, and from a prize spot near the stage she captured this shot of Brendan Benson and drummer Patrick Keeler mid set. (Not pictured are other guitarist/singer Jack White of the White Stripes and Greenhornes' bassist Jack Lawrence, who round out the four piece band.) She tells me the band was greeted by "a high-school girl frenzy of high pitched squeals for frontman Jack White," and that "the night ended on a high with a nice touchy-feely group hug and bow."

Read an interview Chris Riemenschneider of the Star Tribune did with them here.

And Ross Raihala of the Pioneer Press has a few thoughts on the show (including this gem: "The Raconteurs have the potential to become the world's greatest bar band, man") with plenty of user submitted comments that follow in his blog here.

HowWasTheShow forum members had been anticipating the show for months. You can read their comments leading up to it, as well as some forum member post-show reviews in this thread.
