1/1/2008 Mark Mallman and Portia Richardson

Hot on the heels of winning SXSW the past four years straight, Mark Mallman also appears to have won NYEM (New Year’s Eve Minneapolis) this year as well. (Okay, neither one of those are competitions, but if they were….)

I snagged this photo of Mallman just after midnight at the Varsity Theater in Dinkytown singing a duet (and not kidding now) of “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” with The Haves Have It front woman Portia Richardson.

Mallman’s shenanigans Monday also included riding a miniature gas-powered scooter up and over a ramp that was part of his stage set. (If looking absolutely ridiculous while having extremely high entertainment value was the goal, he was definitely victorious.) He concluded the segment by running the rear wheel of the scooter across his piano (some say they saw smoke coming off the keys!), claiming at the end, “That’s never been done! No one has EVER played piano with a motor scooter!”

And it may never be done again.

Other featured covers in Mallman’s NYE set were “Steppin’ Out,” “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” “Maniac,” Rock and Roll All Night,” and “Livin’ After Midnight.”

See the rest of the photo set for a Dirty Dancing-style dance off with Richardson (including a special animated feature) and to get a sense of the epic ridiculousness of the scooter stunt.
