7/30/2006 Crescent Moon of Kill The Vultures at the Turf

Music events like the MMA Awards, Radio K's Best New Bands Showcase, or the City Pages' "Picked to Click" always feel as much like parties as shows; the spirit of celebration is pervasive. The same holds true of Pulse of the Twin Cities annual Twin Town High Music Yearbook CD Release shows, the first of which was held Saturday night at the Turf Club in St. Paul and featured Halloween, Alaska; Kill The Vultures; Martin Devaney; The Pines; and The Glad Version.

This week's Photo of the Week is of Crescent Moon (Alexei Casselle) and DJ Anatomy (Stephen Lewis) of Kill the Vultures, who enticed the large crowd at the Turf to edge forward to listen to their dark, intelligent, and thought-provoking hip hop. Fader Magazine described the group as "hell bent on using beats and rhymes to sound like bent hell, flipping abrasive and dissonant punk and bop samples instead of typical boom bap." Their songs are unique, born of a diverse musical heritage, and have a way of capturing the focused attention of people who might not even consider themselves hip hop fans.

Last weekend, Kill The Vultures opened for Tapes 'N Tapes and the Plastic Constellations at First Avenue. Saturday night, we were treated to an even longer set as the group played the second to last spot on the bill, just before headliners Halloween, Alaska. Saturday's configuration was the duo of Advizer on voice and Anatomy on sampled drums and effects.

Two songs in their set that stood out for me were "Days Slip Into Nights," which appears on the new Twin Town High disc, and "Moonshine" which you can listen to on their MySpace page. Kill The Vultures upcoming shows include Saturday, August 12th at the Pizza Luce Block Party and Thursday, August 17th at Patio Night at the Minnesota Museum of American Art.
