12/22/2006 Black Blondie at the Turf Club

The Twin Cities Music Scene is about variety as much as quality.  Friday night, despite a myriad of shows - including Soul Asylum at First Avenue - clubs all over the Twin Cities were packed with great bands and music fans full of pre-holiday cheer. At the Turf Club in St. Paul, a Heiruspecs-headlined billed sold out shortly after 11 p.m.  Adding to the Heiruspecs already substantial draw, the growing popularity of middle band Black Blondie surely contributed to the sellout.  Black Blondie is a five member ensemble that portrays themselves as a soul, trip hop and jazz group. They’ve already been noticed by critics, coming within a single point of winning the City Pages 2006 Picked to Click best-new-band poll.  (They won Best of the Twin Cities 2006 award for "Best Band Name" from the same publication.)

Black Blondie’s music ranges from moody, soulful, smoky jazz to cool, trippy hip hop.  Built upon a music base provided by talented musicians - stand up bass by Liz Draper, keyboards from Tasha Baron, and drums from Kahlil Brewington – the icing on the cake is the dueling lead vocals from Sarah White and Samahra Linton.  Hear a sampling of their music that shows their range on their MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/blackblondie.  The next show currently posted on their MySpace is Voltage: Fashion Amplified at First Avenue April 11th, 2007.  But keep an eye on their schedule and the HWTS calendar for shows that may pop up in the meantime.
