9/17/2006 Sam Keenan at MN Does MN at the Nomad World Pub

Sam Keenan covered the Vestals’ “Another Way to Kill Me” Saturday night at the Nomad World Pub.  Had more people been on hand, it might have garnered a, “This is a song by a Minnesota artist?”  But everyone in this crowd, mostly made up of Current DJ’s, Pulse of the Twin Cities music editors, Cities 97’s Jason Nagel and the musicians from the other bands, probably knew the song already.

The night opened with Zibra Zibra, nominated for both Best Teen Artist/Group and Best Electronic Artist/Group at this year’s MMAs. Someone always seems to cover “Kiss” by Prince at these things.  This year it was Zibra Zibra.  Their hip set of covers also included “Jive and Claims” by Coach Said Not To and a funky, fuzzed-up version of “Cowbell” by Tapes ‘N Tapes.

One of the best things about MMA events is the chance to hear good artists you may not have heard before.  For me this time, it was The Crime Novels, or at least their singer/songwriter Matthew Anderson, who pulled out tunes by Low (“Words”), Lifter Puller (“I Like The Lights”), the Replacements (“Bastards of Young”), and Husker Du (“Hardly Getting Over It”) as well as a few Crime Novels songs.

Also on the bill was Andra Suchy, nominated this year for Female Vocalist, who was joined by Andrew Pierzina as she covered songs by both Pierzina’s project Dumpster Juice and The Honeydogs, a band with whom you have likely seen Suchy perform.

Saturday was the last chance to turn in your 2006 Minnesota Music Academy Ballot. The 2006 Minnesota Music Academy Awards take place Sunday, October 1st at First Avenue.
