8/27/2006 Mark Mallman at the Hexagon

Mark Mallman rocked the Hexagon with a brief but memorable set Friday night during the Very Retro Birthday Party for Ouija Radio's Christy Hunt. Mallman is getting ready to drop his new record, Between the Devil and Middle C, on August 29 and the audience was treated to two of his new tracks, "Tell Me How a Man Gets Close to You," and the ready-for-radio "Substances" (which is already in rotation at the Current).

For his appearance at the Hexagon, Mallman was accompanied by drummer Sean Hoffman and a pre-recorded back-up tape, giving Minneapolis fans the chance to see what a Mall Man show is like when he is on tour. The two barreled through the short set with plenty of energy, though Mallman seemed slightly less raucous than usual (perhaps because of the absence of a full band?).

Mallman is getting ready to go on tour for his new record, but you can catch him live (with his full band) at his CD release party at First Avenue on Saturday, September 9.
