Seeing Minneapolis rock band Holly Marilyn for the first time was a pleasant, fun surprise, and judging by the feedback of several folks I talked to at the Triple Rock Thursday night they also enjoyed the show and the freshness of their sound.

Holly Marilyn is fronted by Holly Solem, who is the daughter of a local musician who was a co-member of a famous local pop band in the 90's. (I'll leave it for you to figure what band as a music trivia question rather than just spilling the beans.) Solem made news a few years ago with her band Dynamite Lover (name taken from Jon Spencer Blues Explosion song perhaps?) when they played a gig at the Terminal Bar with her father sitting in on bass.

Her new group Holly Marilyn opened an evening of music at the Triple Rock Friday which was to feature Jessy Greene and headliner Mike Gunther. (Gunther was whom I had actually had gone to see, but due to my own confusion about set times I had to miss his midnight act because of a and self-imposed curfew.)

Holly Marilyn plays quirky rock and roll that's as varied as it is captivating. Solem's stage presence is welcoming, friendly and dynamic. She enjoys what she does and knows how to present a rock show. Her invitations for folks at the two tiered Triple Rock to come closer and descend into the pit were actually heeded. (Unfortunately two pitsters got a little beer spattered on their bare legs mid-set as I knocked friend Brenda's pint glass off the narrow rail during one session of applause. Fortunately, Brenda was only drinking Budweiser--I somehow managed to spill only half my pint of Bass.)

Solem's band is comprised of some heavy-weight locals with experience in other well known acts such as Bellwether (Eric Luoma plays guitar), Friends Like These (Steve Murray plays bass) and the Hangups and Autumn Leaves (Jonas producer Bryan Hanna drums). Solem has the confidence, poise and song-writing ability to carry off a show on her own, but a pro-lineup like this doesn't hurt and should help spread the word and get people out to future shows.

I don't have many details on songs to report as I didn't take notes, and information on the band and its music is spotty (or even non-existent) on the internet so far. The intent of this article is to spread the word that this band is a safe bet for a good music experience, and I hope more detail will follow when I get a chance to see them again.
