Two out of town bands and one local one most definitely brought the party to the Triple Rock Friday night for what turned out to be a woefully under-attended show. And yes, all those band names above are spelled correctly.
Frontman Wes Statler of Melodious Owl fame fancies himself a bit of a comedian. At least a third of his interaction was talking to and humorously berating the crowd. Out of all the performers Friday night, Pet.s were the only ones with real musical instruments (some guitars and a drum kit), which although they weren’t used at all times, were at least on the stage. Statler and bandmate Andy Fritz both played guitar, and Fritz played drums for a song or two, but that’s not to say their performance didn’t still fit with the evening’s theme of pre-programmed music. This band is literally so new, their songs don’t have titles yet. Instead they were prefaced as “Our Punk Song” or “The Mirror Song.”

I got hooked on Bonde Do Role a couple months back when every rock magazine seemed to be dropping their name. These Brazilians exude dirty fun, and perform with a troublemaking exuberance that anyone can appreciate. Bandmembers Marina, Pedro and Rodrigo’s spirit of camaraderie was incredibly apparent. Truth be told - I don’t even know what their songs are about as most of their lyrics are in Portuguese. To top off their fun, bratty vocals, they switched up the usual sound of some of their songs, with “Solta De Frango’s” brilliant utilization of the Tone Loc party classic, “Funky Cold Medina” mashed with AC/DC’s “You Shook Me.” The same can be said for the evening’s usage of Europe’s “The Final Countdown” before playing “Marina Gasolina.”
In their native country of Brazil, their music is known as Baile Funk – that translates roughly as “Party Funk.” Looking around during the show I thought I would see a packed Triple Rock, but that wasn’t the case. But people had pushed their way up to the front, crammed in close to the stage as if the show were sold out. It didn’t matter that the venue wasn’t even at half capacity as most of the people in attendance made it a point to be right where the action was, fitting right in with the party spirit of Bonde Do Role.
