The Lovers Show CD Release Show at the Varsity Theater

The Lovers’ Show is about the last show on earth you’d want to go to without a date, but that’s exactly what I did.  On Valentines Day no less.  And though at first I felt I’d stepped into about the most awkwardly hellish situation ever, I managed to leverage my vast concert-going experience to make myself at home in a Varsity Theater full of couples seated cabaret style who were just finishing their catered fancy dinners provided by the Loring Pasta Bar. (To blend in, I used my favorite trick: I pulled out my ever-present camera gear, found myself a spot on the floor by the catwalk, and spent the evening capturing the photos now featured in the photo slideshow to your left.)

The Lovers Show is the adopted name of husband and wife musical duo Jared and Noni Mason, and Thursday’s Varsity show turned out to be one of the more fun shows I’ve seen in a while and certainly one of the most extravagant productions I’ve ever seen at the Varsity. The band had spared no expense to make this an over the top production from bringing in a full size grand piano to hanging kiddie swimming pools from the ceiling to be used as massive yellow plastic drums.

The evening started out with a short one act play. Then came a short film with background on Hope Unlimited for Children. (The show was a benefit for this organization, which is working to saving the lives of Brazil's street kids. More info at http://www.hopeunlimited.org.)

And then came the feature presentation. And what a show it was, almost like a Broadway musical in scale, complete with choreography, costume changes (including one "scene" in which the entire cast was dressed in gospel choir robes), and more. And to think I’d come just because I found their album to be a funky and catchy set of well-constructed and produced songs! I got way more than I bargained for even as many of the songs from the disc were featured over the course of the night. It’s good to be pleasantly surprised, and I was pleasantly surprised over and over again at the Varsity Thursday.
