The Ly’s appeared on stage, decked out in the finest of obnoxious attire, their silver and purple spandex body-suits shimmered in the lights, with long tassels dangling from navel to thigh. Stoic faces and black shades, the Ly’s held up a drape, which we all knew was hiding the lovely Leslie Hall, a.k.a. Keeper of the Gems. When the Cher video on screen stopped, the curtain dropped, signaling the start of song number one, “Gold Pants.” The crowd shrieked, relieved to see that Hall’s mother had created yet another marvelous gold suit for our viewing pleasure.

Leslie Hall, the greatest lady rapper on the World Wide Web, is absolutely a delight to see in concert. The energy was outrageous. The sold-out crowd packed tight into The Entry, gem sweaters reflecting bits of light as mouths shouted the words to strange “hits” like “Blame the Booty” and “Midwest Diva.” Various strange videos played on the screen throughout the show, including clips from aerobics classes, close-ups of spandexed bottoms, CPR instructional tapes, eerie cartoons and mimes in action.

The stage was constantly busy and it was hard deciding whom to watch due to the surplus of shiny objects. Hall jiggled around in her metallic gold suit, combined with a purple leotard and tassled sleeves. Her fake blonde bouffant flew around her sweating face. Her eyes were wide beneath the splash of blue eye shadow. Rhinestones sparkled on her Britney Spears style mic. It was a sight to see.

In between songs, Hall always throws out some unique comments to pump up her adoring fans. She asked to pet a few sweaters and gave a shout out to her fellow Midwest girls, whom she said, “rock the best.” She also made note of her last Minneapolis performance, which included a very drunk Ly, who is no longer a part of her crew. Being at last year’s show, I did notice an extreme difference in the amount of choreography her accompany ladies had this time around— major improvement.

Extra special moments of the show included a smoke machine during “Zombie Killer,” a spinning device, which allowed Hall to turn her bum to the audience for prime shaking during “Blame My Booty.” There was, of course, a blessing of the sweaters. I was lucky to be one of four allowed on stage to showcase my gem beauty, but mine was not chosen for blessing/naming.

For the encore, Hall made a quick change backstage into a similar gold suit, with an added bonus of florescent streamers attached to all side seams. Her sequined gold shoes skipped all around stage for her last song, “Glamorous.” A member of Zibra Zibra accompanied the shenanigans, parading around in a circle with the ladies. Then just as we all thought it had reached the end, Hall announced a dance party and Spears’ “Toxic” blared from the speakers. One of the Ly’s did the worm.

The show was basically flawless. I just wish her unicorn would’ve shown up.
